Smart Craft Studio is over. We don't have to check out till tomorrow. Me and two others planned to go to Kanazawa as it is close (2.5 hr train ride from Hida) and will be out of the way from anywhere else we plan to go to, so we figure we will make a day trip of it to return to Hida that night before officially departing. I just realized I can add maps to this! But some bad news - I forgot my camera battery on the charger so I have no photos other than some not-so-good iPhone shots which I have yet to upload, and will hopefully get copies of photos others had taken.
We get to Kanazawa and head to the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, designed by SANAA. There were a number of permanent pieces (such as a James Turell Sky Room). One highlight was the One Year Project from SUPERFLEX. The gallery itself was set up like a laboratory. They had 6-8 humidifiers going, drawing air into liquid collected in a tub, that is being fermented into a kamboucha. They also had petri dishes that were allowed to cultivate various fungus over time. And they are being organized by colour into a gradient.
From the Museum we headed to the DT Suzuki Museum which was only a couple blocks away. Dedicated to the Japanese Buddhist philosopher who popularize Zen in the West. The museum only has a few artifacts, the majority of the museum is to evoke his philosophy and contemplation. The end of the small exhibit space leads to a large pool and contemplation room that looks onto it. The pool of water is disturbed by a small device in the centre of the pool every so often to prevent the water from being too settled.
We then grabbed lunch at a sushi train place before heading to the Castle...
