We headed back to Hida Sangyo's head office to get a lecture on the materialism of wood, how grain works, etc. We were quizzed (informally) by being passed blocks of wood that had a cut line drawn on it and we had to determine what the grain pattern was along the inner surface of that cut. It was difficult as the lines were concave/convex .
In the afternoon we made chopsticks by using a Japanese planar to shave down piece of wood. Then we watched some films Hida Sangyo has prepared about various manufacturing processes, such as a chair production line, wood bending techniques and the overall designs of various products, and had early group discussion in regard to our projectsI don't have many photos from today as we were mostly in a classroom.
